About Shawn

Shawn E Hansen is a phonographer, composer, improviser and Registered Piano Technician from Kansas.  He studied composition and music theory at the University of Northern Colorado and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sound and Composition from the Milton Avery School of Fine Arts at Bard College in upstate New York; studying with Maryanne Amacher, Richard Teitelbaum, George Lewis, Anthony Braxton, Christian Wolff, La Monte Young, Brenda Hutchinson, Pauline Oliveros and Bob Bielecki among others. Shawn learned the art of tuning and rebuilding pianos during the two-year intensive course at the North Bennet Street School of Piano Technology.  He has tuned and rebuilt pianos for Harvard University, Northwest Missouri State, University of Missouri at Columbia, Mid-American Nazarene University, Park University’s International Center for Music and most extensively at the Conservatory at UMKC for over fifteen years where he is currently the Head Piano Technician. He continues to operate a successful piano technology business in Kansas City with many musicians, churches and recording studios as clients. His music work utilizes his tuning skills by implementing both alternative and historical tuning temperaments in his music.  His compositions and performances earned him the 2018 Charlotte Street Performing Artist Fellowship.  His films and sound-work were showcased at the six-week collaborative exhibition at the Soloway Gallery in Brooklyn last spring with painter, Laurel Sparks. Most recently Shawn spent the year teaching advanced piano technology at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, the oldest trade school in America and one of the premiere institutions in the world offering piano technology education in tuning, regulating and rebuilding.
